Ice Core Chemistry
The high-resolution ice core chemistry sub-project is carried out by the Desert Research Institute and the Norwegian Polar Institute.
Science Objectives
To determine:
* Human impacts on atmospheric & snow chemistry
* Spatial & temporal variability in snowfall
* Ice sheet mass balance
* Variability in atmospheric & ocean circulation
* Variability & provenance of atmospheric dust
* Linkages to lower latitude climate change
Methods
* Collection and Analysis of greater than 650 m of ice cores
* Depth resolution of better than 1 cm
* Analysis of snow pit samples
* Looking for traces of:
o sea salts
o Industrial heavy metal emissions
o Atmospheric terrestrial dust
o Volcanic emissions
o Marine and terrestrial biogenic emissions
