Thursday, last day at Troll
The last day before leaving on a trip is often filled by the many small (and sometimes not so small) details that come up at the last minute. Our traverse is no different. Today, our last full day at Troll Station, saw a number of major events and too many small tasks to count.
First, we were joined by our colleagues from PolarPalooza (Art Howard) and NRK TV (Unni Ødegård and Torbjørn Krane) early this morning, bringing the total number of traverse participants to 16. Second, Jan Gunnar and Mary raised the Norwegian and U.S. flags over the living module, officially opening the traverse. Third, we all participated in attaching the logos of the Norwegian Polar Institute, the National Science Foundation and the International Polar Year. And after an excellent dinner, the advance team left to scout a safe route up the steep sections of the ice surface that the rest of us will encounter tomorrow. As we take a much deserved break this evening, we all recognize that today has marked the end of the preparation phase, and tomorrow marks the beginning of the actual traverse. The weather is a bit cooler this evening (-15 C), perhaps forecasting the temperatures that we will become familiar with in the coming weeks.
