McMurdo and Scott Stations
Some did short hikes in the hills around McMurdo, some of us had an out brief with NSF and Raytheon, while some handled ice cores and cargo. In the afternoon we had a guided tour to the nearby Scott Base (New Zealand).
Position: 77 degrees 51 minutes S, 166 degrees 40 minutes E
Elevation: Close to sea level
Maximum and Minimum temperatures: -6 °C & -2 °C
In the morning we had a teleconference with NSF in Washington D.C. to prepare next year’s season. Further, we had an out brief summarizing our experiences from this year’s season. In the afternoon we had a guided tour to New Zealand’s Scott Base (see photo). It was with excitement we visited Sir Edmund Hillary’s room from when the station was built, i.e. during IGY in 1957. Thereafter, PolarPalooza showed us the pod casts they have prepared from our expedition so far. The quality was excellent; now we really hope they can obtain acceptance for a broadcast production for international or US television.

Polar Puzzle 12: Sometimes very long days of driving are needed in order to traverse Antarctica. After a great dinner on the traverse one day, the evening driver started his turn. The next morning at breakfast, he told the crew that he had dreamed that he was in a blizzard, and he thought that his dream was a warning of things to come. The crew did not let him drive after that. Why?
ANSWER: The driver had been sleeping while driving; otherwise he would not have been dreaming.
