We reduce the risk of altitude sickness

by Zoe Courville — last modified 2008-12-16 19:59

Today is another day of acclimatization here at the South Pole. By taking it easy today, we reduce the risk of altitude sickness.

We are all trying to follow the rules Tayloe gave us in our altitude class (more carbs, less fat and protein…helps keep blood from hanging out in our digestive system, plenty of water, laying low).  I've seen a couple people come down with moderate cases of altitude sickness, and it is not something that I would ever want to experience.  We made more plans about our cargo.  Right now, we have 20,000 lbs (9000kg) that we need to get to Camp Winter…spare parts, tools, a heated tent, safety gear…us!  Camp Winter is about 400m higher than where we are now, and we need to be ready to go to make it liveable once we get there.  So more planning!
