Waiting on the Weather

by Tom Neumann — last modified 2008-12-16 19:37

Today we had planned to send one or two loads of cargo in to the crew at Camp Winter. The report this morning from Camp Winter was that the skiway is complete, and that all was well.

After being delayed for a few hours, our plane was canceled for the day, due to the relatively windy conditions (~20 knots, or about 10 meters per second) here at South Pole.  We are on the schedule again for tomorrow, and hope that the wind dies down and we can get the cargo and parts out to Camp Winter.

When the highest priority mission for the day is canceled, there is usually one (or two) back up options for the plane for the day.  Today, both the first and second priority missions were canceled, but the plane was able to bring some fuel to another group elsewhere on the continent where it was less windy.  The constant reshuffling of flights makes for a busy day for the people who coordinate air traffic for the U.S. Antarctic Program.  But with a little flexibility, most plans eventually work out. We hope that it works out for us sooner, rather than later!
