Sunny Days at Camp Winter
Today was another calm sunny day here at Camp Winter. The main activities for the day involved getting the workshop tent ready for service.
Location: Camp Winter, 86.80S, 54.42E
Elevation: 3151m
Weather: -41C, 5 kts
Among other activities, we installed an insulated plywood floor in the tent, and then moved the new differentials, gearboxes and drive lines into the workshop tent to start to warm up. By the afternoon, the temperature inside the tent was up to about +10C. That is an impressive difference compared with the -40C air outside. Chinook was brought in to warm up over night, and by the time we headed to bed, it was up to +12C inside. That will make the mechanical work much more bearable. Given the heavy work ahead, having a warm space to work will make a huge difference.
On the science side, we (Lou, Zoe and Tom) are just finishing our acclimitization process. We took a hike over to the science tent today. At the end of last season, most of the science boxes were put into the tent, so the first task will be unpacking all the boxes, and putting them back where they belong. This will all take some time. The other accomplishement was to get our new weather station installed ont he roof of the living module.
Although the weather data will be important for some of the science measurements, it is more of a conversation piece at the moment. We have a lot of outdoor work these days, and the temperature and wind speed can make the work more or less enjoyable. We're thankful for the light winds the last few days, and hope the fine weather sticks around for a while.
