Planning for Season 2
The entire traverse team met in Tromsø March 31 to April 2 to work through the plans for the second traverse season, including the science goals, timeline, resources and logistics.
The second traverse will start from the
South Pole in early December 2008, and is planned to arrive at Troll Station in
Dronning Maud Land in mid-February. A
key area of interest will be the Recovery Lakes, a group
of large subglacial lakes between 84°S and 82°S. The lakes will be investigated with deep radar,
seismic, GPS and gravity measurements. In
addition, the ice coring, snow radar, temperature profiling, surface roughness,
UAV, and remote sensing programmes will be continued from last season.
About 3 weeks prior to the traverse start,
a team of mechanics and support crew will fly in to Camp Winter through
the South Pole. A field camp will be established on-site, and modifications and
maintenance of the vehicles carried out during a two week period in late
November. Following this, the traverse crew will drive to Amundsen-Scott South
Pole Station to take on board fuel and supplies. The scientific staff will join
the traverse here.
