South Pole!
All expedition members are now happily gathered at South Pole. It took 1,5 days and 5 Basler flights between “Camp Winter”, where our logistical equipment is wintering, and the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station to get out all our samples, instruments and equipment.
Our cargo is now handled and prepared for shipment to McMurdo Station. Ice cores and snow samples weight around 5 tons (about 100 boxes) and occupied two flights alone, thus there has been a significant load coming in to South Pole with us. The new station is impressive and provides a modern facility for research and logistics. We continue to McMurdo on January 23rd.
In many ways the gathering at South Pole completes our expedition. However, we will maintain the daily diary until we reach Christchurch, New Zealand.
