Ice sheet thickness

Mapping the bottom of the ice sheet through the use of deep radar, by the Norwegian Polar Institute and the University of Oslo.

Ice thickness is a very important part in understanding the mass balance of the Antarctic ice sheet. The traverse route goes over areas of East Antarctica where very few ice thickness measurements have been taken to date.

Lower Frequency Radar (5 to 10 MHz) will be used to map the bottom of the ice sheet, providing measurements of the ice thickness as well as the internal layer stratigraphy in this sparsely-measured area of Antarctica.
